Col Américain (boutonné - Button-down)
Le col américain boutonné est un col qui, comme son nom l’indique, nous vient directement des États-Unis. Aussi appelé col boutonné souple, ce col est muni de deux boutons à ses pointes, qui assurent un maintien impeccable. Cette particularité est due à une petite anecdote : ce col a été spécialement conçu pour les joueurs de polo qui étaient incommodés par les pans de leur chemise qui se relevaient à chaque coup de vent et leur fouettaient le visage. Grâce à ces points de fixation, le col tient bien en place et n’est plus gênant ! Cet héritage sportswear fait du col américain boutonné un col particulièrement adapté aux chemises casual, en leur conférant néanmoins une tenue irréprochable. Côté morphologie, le col américain boutonné conviendra aux visages standards à larges, car il contrebalance bien les proportions. L'origine du col button down
In 19th century England, polo players were required to wear shirts. In order to prevent the collar from whipping their faces, they fastened it with buttons. At the beginning of the 20th century, John Brooks had the idea of adapting this model to the shirts he sold through his company Brooks Brothers. Since that time, the buttondown collar has been one of the most common collars for casual shirts.
When to wear a button down collar?
Traditionally, the button-down collar is the most classic fabric for Oxford or Denim shirts. It can be worn with casual shirts or in the office but it should be avoided for formal shirts although it can be worn with a tie (if it is not too big). At Première Manche, all shirts are buttoned, the button is often hidden under the collar.
